Training and development

We believe in continuous learning

We believe in caring for profits, people and the planet. We care for people through our empowerment initiatives, ongoing training and skills development, our investment in culinary excellence (partner in SACA’s Centre for Culinary Excellence) and sponsorships.

Our responsible waste management programme, herb and vegetable gardens and other initiatives show our commitment to caring for the environment

How Feedem cares for people

It is important for Feedem to be a responsible corporate citizen that cares for profit, people and the planet.

Feedem was the first catering company to embrace the principles of empowerment by entering into strategic partnerships and profit-share schemes with employees and entrepreneurs.

  • Value Adding Supplier: Feedem Group (Pty) Ltd is a value-adding supplier.

Skills development and training enhance our business performance and our staff morale. We use various programmes and initiatives to achieve this:

  • Quality assurance programmes: Several inhouse programmes help to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Continuous learning journeys: Various training programmes ensure the ongoing development of staff members on all levels in our organisation.
  • Accredited learning programmes: We offer various CATHSSETA accredited skills programmes, learnerships and internships each year.
  • Learnerships for learners living with disability: We collaborate with KVRQhubeka to provide a learnership programme in Food and Beverage Handling (NQF Level 1) to disabled learners in Gauteng.
  • Skills programmes: Feedem enrols its employees in various skills programmes.
  • Internships: Feedem regularly offers internships to university graduates and TVET college students who have obtained hospitality qualifications. These structured programmes range from 6 to 18 months and provide students with hands-on experience in our units. On completion of these internships, students can apply for full-time employment with Feedem.
  • Bursaries: Feedem offers employees and unemployed youth the opportunity to obtain further qualifications by providing bursaries to study full-time or part-time at recognised learning institutions.

The purpose of Feedem Connect is to share and manage knowledge and information by focusing on improved performance, competitive advantages, innovation, the sharing of lessons learned and continuous self-improvement. This learning portal:

  • Hosts training content (videos, assessments, assignments, etc.)
  • Allows access to customised real-time reporting (grades, logs, activity completion, competencies, etc.) by individuals and managers
  • Facilitates communication and notifications (SMS/email)
  • Facilitates offline learning via a desktop or mobile web application.

The resource portal is also a digital repository for operational and support documentation. Users (depending on their access level) have access to internal communications, documents, promotional material, and a recipe bank.

The online learning modules include Induction for Management and Staff, Occupational Health and Safety for Management and Staff, Food Safety, SHE Representatives, Basic Nutrition, Allergen Awareness, Health Care, Customer Service, and Culinary Excellence.

We are actively involved in various sponsorships, fundraising events, upliftment programmes and development initiatives throughout the country.

  • Sport: We sponsor various sports events for young people. This includes Feedem-sponsored provincial and national events. Many Feedem supporters and clients were introduced to our delicious lunch packs alongside a cricket field!
  • Fundraisers: Our clients often host fundraising golf days and others such events. We support their causes by sponsoring snacks, hampers, teams, T-shirts and prizes.
  • Mandela Day support: We support various client initiatives by providing soup and sandwiches and donating food items to charities in need.

Feedem is proud to be part of the Centre for Culinary Excellence (CCE) of South African Chefs Association (SACA). The aim of the CCE is to:

  • Provide services tailored to meet the specific needs of SACA members, hospitality students and the public
  • Develop skills for our industry
  • Provide educational opportunities for disadvantaged students
  • Preserve the rich culinary heritage of our country by managing an archive for culinary artefacts and photographs, and a library with printed and online culinary resources
  • Provide support and sponsorships

How Feedem cares for the environment

Environmental initiatives at Feedem include the following:

  • Internal awareness campaigns and regular communication:
We share information on responsible waste management, the reduction of our carbon footprint and other environmental concerns with our colleagues and clients on various platforms, which include newsletters, posters and e-mails.

  • Responsible waste management:
We encourage recycling at all our sites and sort our waste accordingly. Our waste management programme includes setting up wormeries which turn kitchen waste into quality compost for our herb and vegetable gardens.

  • Herb and vegetable gardens
We have established various gardens around the country to help us provide fresh herbs and vegetables.
